Five for Friday: Lissa Rankin M.D.

04/06/12

When I first heard of Lissa Rankin's virtual integrative medicine resource, Owning Pink, I was immediately drawn to the name because clearly, I'm owning my own pink. But more than that, I have long believed that there is a place in traditional medicine for what we in the field of holistic nutrition practice and preach. When you get lucky enough, there is a doctor like Lissa Rankin who agrees. … [Read more...]

Healthy Hot Spot: Blue Smoke Battery Park City

04/05/12

For everyone who thinks BBQ can't be healthy, think again. In my relationship, one of us is clearly a BBQ lover while the other (ahem, me), would rather eat dirt. Needless to say, I've found myself playing the role of good sport in a few BBQ joints over the years, munching on sides while my fellow diners gnaw on animal carcass ribs. I fully expected the same scenario to play out at Blue Smoke. … [Read more...]

Spicy Stuffed Zucchini

04/04/12

Craving Mexican food but not the indigestion? Every once in awhile, I crave Mexican food (guacamole is my favorite!) but then I remember how I usually feel after I eat it. Stuffed, bloated and generally yucky. When I created these spicy stuffed zucchini, I had only a few items on hand in addition to the zucchini. Some red onion, garlic, a chili pepper, leftover brown rice, a little bit of … [Read more...]

The Artist’s Way

04/03/12

In January, I cracked open a book that had been sitting on my bookshelf for more than three years. It wasn't just any book, it was The Artist's Way, a 12-week self-guided program aimed at uncovering my inner artist. Huh? I never considered myself an artist in any sense of the word. A writer? Kind of. But never an artist. Still, I'd heard good things about it, the author Julia Cameron had been a … [Read more...]

Chia Seed Parfait

04/02/12

One of the things I love most about cooking is not just creating recipes, but assembling recipes! The chia seed parfait I created this morning was less about cooking and more about putting the pieces together like a puzzle. I just used what I had in my kitchen to create this breakfast treat. And if you make it in a mason jar, it travels well too! I probably don't have to remind you what a … [Read more...]

David’s Superfood Smoothie

03/31/12

It all started rather innocently. I had been slipping greens into what had previously been David's all-fruit blueberry smoothie. He didn't seem to care, or even notice for that matter. As long as they still looked blue, I was in the clear. Then I went to Long Beach and saw David Wolfe make a superfood smoothie. What can I say, I got inspired. David's favorite morning smoothie was about … [Read more...]

Five for Friday: Terri Cole

03/30/12

If you don't know this woman already, you're going to want to. Wise, empowered and luminous, Terri Cole is inspiring men and women everywhere to live fearless and free. She is well-known for her signature question that has become one of my own favorite mantras: “If Not You…Who?” “If Not Now…When?” Q1.  What is the #1 wellness practice you live by? That thing that you do every day without … [Read more...]

Healthy Hot Spot: Dig Inn Seasonal Market

03/29/12

When I worked in an office, I longed for healthy lunch options. Believe it or not, I eventually even swore off  deli salads because of the lack of organic produce available and the negative energy of the guys who slapped them together at warp speed behind the counter. (Hint: Think about the energy in the environment where your food is made and where you eat it. It may sound silly, but the … [Read more...]

The Kitchen Counter Cooking School

03/28/12

"For most people, the only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude" - Julia Child I'm a self-proclaimed bookworm and David likes to joke that I always  have my nose stuck in a book. My favorite books are usually the ones that have been recommended to me. But I stumbled on this one on a chance trip to Barnes & Noble. It stared up at me … [Read more...]

This past weekend we took advantage of the weather This past weekend we took advantage of the weather and left the city for a hike. The last time we had been to @rockefellerstatepark was in April 2021 (almost to the day) during the time we don't talk about and before that right before Valentina was born when my walk was more of a waddle, so we were due a visit back. We had forgotten that what makes this hike so special is that one trail leads to @stonebarns agriculture center where you can stop and have lunch or just grab a refreshment. Highly worth the one hour drive out of the city. Swipe to the end to see a baby Valentina in what has become her happy place. 💚💋🥾
