It’s true I love clothes, shoes and boutique fitness classes. But all of those items – alone or together – can put a strain on my budget. Moreover, as a business owner, I’m careful with how I spend my money. That said, I’m always looking for ways to stay fit on a budget.
When I left my full-time office job, I scrutinized my once exorbitant spending habits. I realized I needed to cut back to get ahead. Clothes, shoes and classes all had to go. Or did they?
Truthfully, if you’re a fitness fanatic like me living in a big city, staying in shape can be costly. However, I spent a year trying to spend more frugally. And I’m happy to say I’ve managed to find the best ways to stay fit on a budget.
Tips to Stay Fit on a Budget
- Deals are a Do: Scour deal sites like Gilt City, Living Social and Groupon for low prices on class packages. I’ve scored classes at Pure Barre, Barry’s Bootcamp and Bikram Yoga Herald Square this way. Most deals are for first-time students only so read the fine print.
- First-time Free: If it’s your first time taking class, some studios offer a free trial class and/or a low introductory rate. For example, at one time, Chaise23 had a 3 for $33 special. Bikram Yoga Herald Square offered a weekly unlimited package for $45 or a monthly unlimited for $95 for first time customers.
- Partner Up: If you have a blog, work in the wellness space or have a prominent social media presence, some studios may be open to partnerships. A partnership can be free or discounted classes in exchange for promotion on your web site or social channels. Terms and conditions will vary by studio. Explore this option only if you’ve developed an authentic relationship and it feels right to ask.
- Get Outside: When the weather’s nice, get outside and take in some fresh air. Explore new running trails and bike paths. Or, put park benches to use for strength and resistance training. Additionally, use the free Charity Miles app to challenge yourself with distance while raise money for a charity of your choice. Choose to bike, run or walk with the app. If the weather’s not so nice, bundle up and you can still take advantage of the fresh air.
- Pin and Win: Search Pinterest for indoor and outdoor strength and cardio workouts. Find workouts you can do on their own or ones you can pair with a complementary workout. Also, check out my How to Stay Fit on a Budget pin board to get started.
