A lot of people in the fitness world are talking about macros and wondering “What is a Macro Coaching”? The term, “macro” is short for macronutrient of which there are three – carbs, fat and protein. These macronutrients comprise the meals and snacks you eat. But did you know that you can hire a Coach that specializes in Macros? A Macro Coach can help you tailor your macros to your fitness goals?
As a macro coach for women, I even created a free guide to help you: Tracking Macros for Beginners. It includes step-by-step instructions for how to figure out your macros and three sample meal plans. You’ll be tracking macros like a pro in no time!
What Is a Macro Coach?
A macro coach is a nutrition coach that has knowledge of macros and can help guide you on your journey with personalized macro goals while making adjustments and supporting you with any challenges along the way. A Macro Coach can help you tailor your nutrition to individual goals such as weight loss, muscle gain and maintenance – your ideal macro ratios will be different for each of these goals. Learn more about how to figure out your macros.
Benefits of Macro Coaching
If you’re curious about what is Macro Coaching or why you may need a Macro Coach, the benefits are plentiful. First and foremost, a Macro Coach provides a personalized approach to nutrition that in turn will help you reach your goals faster and in a focused way whether it be enhanced fitness performance, more energy or sustainable weight loss and maintenance. Not to mention, a Macro Coach provides motivation and accountability on the path to reaching your goals.
Whether you’re new to macros or you’ve been counting them for awhile and want to experience the benefits of a Macro Coach, check out my group macro coaching program, TRIM.
How Macro Coaching Works
When you work with a Macro Coach, one on one, you will start out by assessing your individual goals and requirements, your coach will determine your individual macros and create a personalized nutrition plan and monitor your progress or make adjustments as needed. Of course, there’s lots of education and support along the way. It works mostly the same in a group macro coaching program like TRIM. Everyone starts with the same standard macros to get started. However, everyone’s individual macros vary slightly based on their individual stats (age, height and weight) as well as goals and exercise habits. We can even safely adjust macros for women who are breastfeeding.
Once you’ve been doing the program for awhile and are seeing results, you have the option to customize your macros to your body type for even more personalized results.
I have seen Macro Coaching work for almost anyone. As mentioned, women who are pregnant and breastfeeding can do it (we do adjust calories so that it’s safe and won’t allow pregnant women to set a goal for weight loss). A Macro Coach can also help you adapt to dietary restrictions. For example, if you are vegan or vegetarian.
How Macro Coaching Works with Exercise
Fitness and nutrition always go hand-in-hand. In my experience, Macro Coaching works best when it’s integrated with a solid exercise program, specifically strength training to drive fat loss. This is where my group program really shines. In this program, we do Carb Cycling (two days) which we pair with HIIT workouts and fat burning cardio. We also incorporate two rest days. Our strength training days (there are three of them) are paired with the macro counting days. This offers the opportunity to eat a specific amount of protein to support muscle growth and repair as well as complex carbohydrates to fuel the workouts. Together, this macronutrient balance creates a lean and toned physique. Although I encourage exercise for overall health, I have many clients who opt out of exercise and still see results with Macro Coaching after some adjustments.

Macro Tools and Resources
There are many nutrition tracking apps and online calculators that can help you identify your macros and track what you eat against your macro goals. However, many of these resources require at least some knowledge of macros and nutrition. TRIM has its own proprietary app that helps you determine and track your macros with unmatched accuracy.
To answer the original question, “what is macro coaching”?, in short, Macro Coaching encourages a holistic approach to health and nutrition in that no foods are excluded. The focus is on integrating whole foods and exercise to create sustainable results for the client whether they are fat loss, muscle gain, weight maintenance or athletic performance.
Is Macro Coaching Right for You?
Ask yourself these questions:
- Do I have specific health and fitness goals related to weight loss. muscle gain or athletic performance?
- Do I feel like I know what to do but I’m not doing it?
- Have I tried other approaches with little success?
- Do I have a strategy to hit my goals or am I winging it with limited knowledge?
- Do I thrive with clear guidelines?
- Do I need some help with basics like starting an exercise program and learning how to eat healthy?
if you answered yes to one or more of these questions then Macro Coaching could be the right approach for you!
