Everytime I turn around, it seems there is another food festival in NYC celebrating fresh food and local farmers. The more the merrier because events like these are exactly what this city needs to raise awareness for sustainability. My boyfriend scouted today’s event, The 1st Annual Back to Basis Good Food Festival in Gansevoort Plaza co-hosted by Basis and the Feed Foundation. The gathernig of local food establishments aimed to celebrate the season’s harvest with tastings that were local and 100 percent traceable from 30 family farmers and local top chefs. There were a variety of ticket options avaiable so we chose a $35 ticket which got us eight tastings.
My tasting looked like this:
Black eggplant caponata crostini and pear and chocolate semolina cake
Sourced: Blooming Hill Farm, Blooming Grove, NY (eggplant, pears); Satur Farms Cutchogue, NY (herbs), Amy’s Bread, NY, NY; Champlain Valley Milling, Westport, NY (organic flour)
Dirty Bird T0-Go
Marinated beets with goat cheese and red onion
Sourced: J. Glebocki Farms, Goshen, NY (beets and onions); Four Brothers Dairy Goat Farm, Millerton, NY (goat cheese)
Colicchio & Sons
Grilled pizza with greenmarket vegetables. This was so outstanding we had two tastings – the best item we ate all day!
Spiced Apple Cake with Butternut Squash Mousse
Sourced: Simple Kitchen Gardens, Bethlehem, CT (squash); Satur Farms, Cutchogue, NY (apples); Evans Farmhouse Creamery Norwich, NY (butter); Daisy Flour Annville, PA (flour)
And of course, my boyfriend’s tasting looked a little more like Barbecue (Dinosaur BBQ and Lowcountry) and Shephard’s Pie (Highlands) – MWAH, I love this guy!
