Giving Back

10/06/14

giving back

Inspired by Erin’s post (with the exact same title – thanks for the inspo Erin!), today I’m talking about how I use my time and talent for giving back.

I’m fortunate enough to have everything I need. Living in this huge city, I’m reminded every single day I step outside that there are countless others who don’t.

Instead of choosing to give money to people on the subway or sidewalks, I’ve made a conscious decision to give back in other ways.

When I moved to New York City 10 years ago, I joined the New York Junior League. I wanted a way to both volunteer consistently, develop my leadership skills and meet other accomplished women. The Junior League provided all three.

Since I’m so passionate about health and wellness,  I got involved with a committee that promoted healthy living to those in the most underserved and at-risk parts of the city. It was a way to use my knowledge and spread my passion to others in need of guidance. Every time I presented a workshop, I left feeling fulfilled.

Today, I’m the co-chair of a committee with a similar mission. CHEF (Cooking and Health Education for Families), empowers families to make life-long healthy choices by teaching proper nutrition and physical activity while placing an emphasis on planning, collaboration and fun.

Being a healthy role model for children is a responsibility I take very seriously.

Children have so much potential and the only chance they get to develop it is by having adults around them who are invested in their well-being.

I’ve always admired Jamie Oliver for the work he’s done with Healthy School Food and this is my own way of getting involved with a cause I feel passionate about. I’m thankful for the National Association of Nutrition Professionals for recognizing me with their Community Award for the work I’ve done promoting wellness in the community.

I’d love to know how you give back. Let me know in the comments below so we can all inspire each other to get involved!

Thank you so much for the shout-out and congrats to you for being recognized for your ongoing commitment to working with children. I’m so with you – empowering children to understand what good food is and equipping them with skills as they grow is fundamentally one of the best services we can provide our kiddos.

I love the acronym for CHEF by the way – too cute!

I was in the West Village for an event and hadn't had my matcha fix yet. I passed Aoko and made a mental note.

Then I proceeded to pass many more matcha cafes with long lines.

Aoko didn't have a line and it seemed authentic to me. Also, I recalled hearing good things.

The vibe was a little sterile. You order off a screen and there's a huge selection of matcha drinks and ice cream. Then wait for your number to be called.

I chose the Coconut Matcha Cloud. There was no description on the screen and the actual drink looked nothing like the photo.

It was a cloud of whipped matcha floating on top of coconut water with tapioca-like shapes on the bottom.

My expectations were low. But I ended up being pleasantly surprised. Once the whipped matcha mixed with the coconut water, it was incredibly creamy and I could tell the matcha was high quality. 8.5/10. I'll be back to try the regular matcha latte. 💚💋🍵

This is a new-to-me boutique jewelry brand. The pieces are stunning, hold meaningful affirmations and are just incredibly wearable.

I even got to meet the Founder @jennlow.wco who explained the meaning and inspiration behind the pieces.

There were so many beautiful pieces to layer and try on. I chose the Heart Locket Necklace to take home.

Inside it says "follow your heart" and it can be worn open or closed though I like it opened best.

I was also eyeing the You are Magic Medallion Locket.

So I bought that too!

Such a fun morning in the West Village! I can't wait to wear my new jewelry! 💚💋🪎 #wcocommunity
There is so much beauty and nature in and around N There is so much beauty and nature in and around NYC and so much to see and do. We've been taking advantage of the perfect weather and venturing beyond our neighborhood with Valentina to show her all this incredible city has to offer. Last weekend was @metcloisters and @forttryonpark , which brought me back to 2007 in the city when I would circumnavigate Manhattan on my bike starting at the East River down to the The Battery and up the Hudson River to The Cloisters and Fort Tryon Park then back down the East River through Harlem- a 30 mile round trip. We enjoyed a long walk and explored the stunning gardens inside the park before perusing the museum. The perfect way to spend a holiday Monday. 💚💋🏰
