Cooking at Home: New Cookbooks for Fall

11/01/12

Sandy put “the city that never sleeps to sleep ….”

But not for long

New Yorkers are resilient and that’s why I love this city.

We’re still without power and now water and staying with friends to wait it out (thank goodness for them). Needless to say, cooking at home hasn’t been possible this week. So in the spirit of “do what I say and not as I do” (at least for this week), I want to share some of my new favorite cookbooks.

As you know, I’m a big fan of cooking at home and believe it’s the only way to live a truly healthy lifestyle. Fall weather makes me want to cozy up at home and cook. One way to do it is rely on cookbooks to inspire you and guide you on your cooking journey.

They say the older we get the more we become like our mothers. My mom used to relax by reading cookbooks. I didn’t get it. Until suddenly I found myself doing the same thing. With a love of cooking, comes a love of reading cookbooks, I suppose.

These are a few of the cookbooks — from the healthy to instructional and even literary — gracing my kitchen counters these days:

Crazy Sexy Kitchen: Cancer survivor, wellness activist and NYT best-selling author Kris Carr is at it again with Crazy Sex Kitchen. She and Whole Foods Chef Chad Sarno are making prevention delicious. Whether you’re a foodie or a novice, Kris Carr makes it easy to live a plant-based lifestyle with 150 recipes thoughtfully organized and labeled to make your life not only healthier, but easier. Whether you buy the book online or in a store, you’ll get free extras from Kris. Click here to find out more!

Cook Yourself Sexy: Model-turned-chef Candice Kumai presents mouth-watering comfort food gone sexy in her latest 100-recipe sequel to Cook Yourself Thin. Think tasty salads that only look elaborate, better-for-you mac ‘n’ cheese and even a Hangover Breakfast Burrito — all packed with nutrients yet never lacking flavor. Between recipes, Candice dishes out advice from one down-to-earth chick to another. Having met her, I can vouch for her friendly, outgoing demeanor. Paging through her cookbook is almost like having a BFF right there in the kitchen with you.

The Karma Chow Ultimate Cookbook: A collection of meat- and dairy-free recipes for any meal or occasion from vegan chef Melissa Costello. Whether you’re cooking for one or a crowd, breakfast or dinner — Melissa’s got you covered.

My Berlin Kitchen: A Love Story – Cooking can literally change your life and the blogger behind The Wednesday Chef, Lisa Weiss, tells the story of how she did just that through cooking. This book is romantic, nostalgic and entertaining.

Canal House Cooks Every Day: This is your guide to a year’s-worth of simple, seasonal recipes from the bloggers at Canal House Cooks Lunch.

I can’t wait to get back home and into the kitchen. In the meantime, tell me what are some of your favorite cookbooks you rely on for healthy recipes and cooking tips?

The triple strain of caring for kids, aging parent The triple strain of caring for kids, aging parents and our careers is real. Caregivers (especially those from the sandwich generation) spend an average of 27 hours/week providing care to others and nearly 40% of them spend 40 hours/week caregiving, the equivalent of a full time job. Thank you to @pacirabio and @theskimm for inviting me to be part of this powerful conversation, take a pause and feel less alone. #betterispossible #middleofitalltalks 💚💋🗣️
