Beat the Heat

06/09/11

Temperatures are climbing toward 100 degrees and while I’m happy warmer weather is here, I also know the importance of keeping cool in scorching temperatures. Take a peek at my list of obvious and not-so-obvious tips for staying cool.

Of course, hydration tops the list, but do so with plain water and more of it than usual. Don’t like the taste of water? Try adding some fruit like fresh berries, sliced cucumber or other and citrus fruits (lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit). If you’re sweating heavy-duty replenish electrolytes quickly with plain, refreshing coconut water.

Until your body gets used to the heat and humidity, dial back your workouts slightly either in length or intensity to avoid overdoing it. Whenever you plan to be outdoors, wear light colored clothes in natural fabrics. If you are exercising, try a moisture-wicking fabric.

Start your day with a cool bath or shower. If you are at home, soak your feet in a bucket of water or if you are out and about, run cool water over your wrists for ten seconds or longer.

Eat fruits and vegetables with high water content like cucumbers, celery, leafy green vegetables and watermelon. Fresh watermelon juice is delicious and can be particularly cooling. Cold, sliced cucumber on the eyes of forehead can bring the body temperature down.

Mint also has a cooling properties and can be added to recipes like juices, teas and soups for a cooling effect.

Enjoy spicy foods which induce perspiration to cool the body. A dash of cayenne pepper in sauces, salad dressings and fresh juices can turn up the heat in your daily eats.

What are your favorite ways to beat the heat?
