The Number One question I’m asked is, ” How can I stay healthy on vacation?” For me, this is really all about balance, knowing what to order and when to indulge. Vacation shouldn’t be a time to stress about every little thing you eat, but it’s also not wise to throw caution to the wind.
Since I just returned from a vacation to Turks & Caicos, here’s a sneak peak at how I did it:
Start the day right: A buffet breakfast can be tricky but I relied on the homemade granola with lots of nuts and seeds, some local fruit in season and a cup of green tea for breakfast. There was also a to-die-for banana bread and we split a slice some days.
Have a leisurely lunch: I often opt for salads for lunch but sometimes my boyfriend can entice me to share something more decadent so I pick and choose – a crab cake sandwich or his favorite, margherita pizza, is worth the share. When sharing a sandwich, I usually ask for a small side salad so I can fill up on greens and I’m not tempted by the fries that come with it π
Dinner done right: Since I was in the Caribbean, I knew the fish would be fresh and wild caught so I usually stuck with the catch of the day for dinner and a side of steamed veggies or a salad. Some nights we shared a dessert – again, be judicious.
Keep it cool with Kombucha: The store at our resort sold Kombucha – lucky me!
Sweat it out: We made sure to stay active with tennis, yoga, snorkeling and kayaking but took a break from our usual running and weight lifting — it is vacation after all!
Local delights: A day trip conching and snorkeling kept us even more active and pleasantly surprised us with a fresh, raw conch ceviche! Yum!
Crazy Caribbean cocktails: It wouldn’t be vacation without sugary, fruity cocktails adorning umbrellas and seriously, who can resist? This is one of my favorite parts of a beachy holiday but I sip it slowly and usually don’t drink the entire thing. I like Bethenny Frankel’s rule of diminishing returns — when it stops tasting as good as the first few sips, I walk away π
