10 Superfoods That Love You Back

02/13/14

Superfoods

I had the opportunity to preview the newest edition (3rd ed.) of Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health and Happiness. This book has been like my nutrition bible since attending IIN five years ago. But I was pleasantly surprised to see a TON of new content, including a sidebar about global superfoods.

Eating the right food has everything to do with your health and well-being. So when you eat these highly nutritious superfoods, you better believe you’ll be able to see and feel the results.

1. Acai: A bright purple berry from the Brazilian rainforests full of antioxidants, amino acids and healthy fats. Add it in powder form to smoothies and juices for an extra dose of nutrients.

2. Bee pollen: The accumulation of flower pollen, nectar and saliva from bees, bee pollen is high in amino acids, B-complex vitamins ad folic acid.

3. Cacao: Chocolate in its purest form, the cacao bean native to Mexico is rich in antioxidants, fiber, magnesium and iron.

4. Chia Seeds: It’s incredible that such a minuscule seed can contain so many health benefits: antioxidants, fiber, calcium and Omega-3 fatty acids are among them.

5. Goji Berries: An immune-boosting berry from China, the Goji Berry is packed with carotenoids. The Chinese believe the fruit can extend life expectancy.

6. Hemp Seeds: A good source of protein, Omega-6 and Omega-3s

7. Quinoa: A seed indigenous to South American, quinoa is high in protein but cooks like a grain and is also a fantastic source of fiber, antioxidants and other vitamins.

8. Manuka Honey: A honey from bees that pollinate the Manuka bush native to New Zealand that promotes healing and fights infection.

9. Moringa: Ninety-two nutrients and 46 antioxidants make the leaves of the Moringa plant one of the most nutritious plant species. Not to mention it’s iron and protein are levels are through the roof. Brew the powder into tea or add it to a smoothie.

10. Spirulina: A microalgae, spirulina is fund in fresh and salt water the world over. The complete protein also happens to be one of the richest sources of B vitamins and iron.

How many superfoods are you already eating regularly?ย

Happy New Year! Every year, I like to post a senti Happy New Year! Every year, I like to post a sentiment I've found that inspires me for the year ahead. This one is a little longer than usual, but worth the read. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’‹๐ŸŽŠ

A Willingness to Keep Showing Up

I step into this new year
gently, without resolutions,
with just a simple willingness,
to keep going,
to keep moving forward.

Not the bright, declarative kind of decision
that arrives with banners and promises,
but the quieter kind,
the one that asks for nothing grand.

No transformation.
Just an honest effort
to place one foot in front of the other,
without needing it to be a victory march.

To keep going isnโ€™t strength.
Itโ€™s letting the days arrive as they are,
some heavy,
some hollow,
some unexpectedly kind.

Itโ€™s allowing grief, fatigue, memory, and love
to share the same room,
without insisting that any of them leave.

There is no list.
No reinvention.
No deadline for becoming someone new.
There is only the steady choice
to remain present,
to trust that willingness itself
is an act of grace.

So this year begins
not with resolve, but with intention:
the intention to stay present,
the intention to try again tomorrow,
the intention to simply keep showing up.
