11 Unhealthy Habits to Kiss Goodbye

12/30/12

11 Unhealthy Habits

Last year, I had high hopes for what the year would bring. No doubt 2012 was a year of ups and downs and heart-wrenching devastation. So, I decided that this year would be a fresh start and I would focus on getting rid of some unhealthy habits in my life.

In 2012, it was crystal clear that the only thing within my control is my attitude and how I treat myself. Remember this as you look back on what you’ve accomplished, the lessons you’ve learned and set your intentions for the year ahead.

In honor of the new year, I brainstormed some of the unhealthy habits I’ve struggled with in the past which happen to be what my clients need support with too (law of attraction at its best!)

Unhealthy Habits ListWhat will you do today?

In 2013, if you only do one thing, do this: Shake off the people, unhealthy habits and behaviors that don’t serve you.

Nutrition and Physical

1. Juice Cleansing and Detoxing

I know everyone’s doing it. Yes, everything you read says it’s good for you. But ask yourself why: Are you treating your body poorly during the times in between with sugar, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine? Are you trying to lose weight? Do you constantly feel bloated or have bad skin breakouts? In my book, these are all symptoms of a bigger problem; one a juice cleanse can’t solve long-term. Consider changing your daily habits instead.

2. Diet Soda

This one was a hard habit to break for me. I loved the fizz and the fix it gave me. But I realized I needed it most when I was 1) thirsty and 2) tired or bored. With that revelation, I’m a good four years diet soda free. When I really want the fizz, I drink seltzer. Whatever your vice may be, what are its triggers? What can you replace it with? Start there. Even just acknowledging them can set the wheels of change in motion.

4. Skipping Meals

We all have busy days when it’s hard to sit down to a meal, but if this is a regular occurrence for you, make it a point to set aside time to sit down and eat. It prevents overeating later on and keeps your metabolism steady. You — and your waistline — will be glad you did.

4. Dining Out and/or Relying on Takeout for Every Meal

This alone is the best thing I’ve ever done for my health. Sometimes it does feel easier to order in or go out and there are times when you should, but more often than not, cook at home. It’s the single, best way to lose those last 5 pounds, de-bloat and save money. Challenge yourself to a week or even a month with the #CookatHomeChallenge. It starts January 1.

5. Staying Up Past Your Bedtime

Resist the urge to catch up on Gossip Girl. It certainly can’t rev your metabolism and slow aging the way rest can. Sleep is free and one of the best things you can do for your body. So get lots of it. 8 hours a night, missy!

6. Binge Drinking

It’s unattractive, makes you feel like crap and eat more crap. And the older you get, the longer you’ll feel like crap. Have fun, be present and know your limits.

7. Fad Diets

Vegan, Paleo, Gluten-free and the lost goes on! There will always be a new diet or popular way of eating. The real challenge is knowing what works for you. If you find yourself jumping from fad diet to fad diet, take a step back and explore what your body needs.

Mental and Emotional

8. Negative Self Talk

This is a big one for a lot of women and I’ve found the root of it lies in comparison. Don’t do it. Yes, it’s going to be difficult. At times, near impossible. Do whatever you have to do — put down the magazines, log off the Internet, call a friend, post affirmations on your mirror. If you wouldn’t say it to a child, don’t say it to yourself.

9. Dating Bad Boys

Yes, they’re fun and exciting but the thrills will only get you through a night, not a lifetime. Spend some time alone, cultivate self love, know your worth and how you want to feel with a partner then don’t settle for anything less.

10. Toxic Relationships

Like Oprah said, “surround yourself with people who will lift you higher” Let go of those who don’t. You know who they are. Being in the presence of supportive people will change your world. It’s that simple.

11.Putting Your Dreams and Desires on Hold

If you wait to be ready you’ll never be ready. The time is N-O-W. If you take a step forward in the direction of your dreams, the odds are you’ll only keep moving that way.

What about you? What are some of the unhealthy habits you’re looking forward to dropping this year?
