If you want to know what will be in everyone’s grocery carts and gym bags for the next year, you go to Expo West. This was my second year at Expo West (8 years attending Expo East previously), and 2026 didn’t disappoint. From nostalgia-fueled snacks to high-tech hydration, the floor was buzzing with a clear message: Functional is the new fundamental.
Here’s a breakdown of the biggest trends I saw.

1. Hydration is Getting an Upgrade: Forget plain water. We are officially in the era of “performance hydration.” Hydrating is no longer just about quenching thirst; it’s about cellular efficiency. I saw everything from premium raw coconut waters to high-potency electrolyte powders designed for rapid recovery.
2. The 90s are Back (and healthier-than-ever): Nostalgia was the secret ingredient this year. Brands are reimagining our childhood favorites with a grown-up twist. Think “junk food” flavors from the 90s like classic sodas, snacks and treats are re-built with clean labels and zero refined sugars. It’s all the vibes, none of the crash.
3. All-Day Functional Support: Every bite and sip now has a job to do. Functional ingredients like adaptogens and mushrooms were everywhere, but the real stars were Matcha and Protein. Matcha has evolved from a latte to a core ingredient in snacks and energy bars, while protein is now in everything from cereal to spreads, just another way to ensure we’re hitting those macros!
4. Gut Health 2.0: We’ve moved past basic yogurt. The floor was packed with sophisticated pre- and probiotic infusions. We’re seeing “gut-healthy” versions of everything from sparkling tonics, shelf-stable snacks and fiber-rich desserts that actually taste like a treat.
5. The Rise of the Mindful Drinker: The “Sober Curious” movement has officially gone mainstream. The non-alcoholic and mocktail section was massive, featuring complex, botanical-forward spirits and ready-to-drink cocktails that feel sophisticated enough for a dinner party, sans the hangover.
6. Women’s Health Takes Center Stage: Perhaps the most important shift this year was the focus on specialized Women’s Health. This wasn’t just “pink-washed” marketing; it was deep-dive nutrition for hormonal support, supplements for brain health and cognitive clarity and a major push toward sustainable period products. Brands are finally treating women’s physiology as a priority, not an afterthought.
Expo West 2026 brought it all this year and proved that “healthy” isn’t a niche anymore, it’s the standard. Which of these trends are you most excited to see on your local shelves?
