As a Health Coach, I’m often asked about supplements. Most commonly: Do I need to supplement? What supplements should I take? What brand of X supplement do you recommend? Until a few years ago, I was just as confused as most people. The thing is, supplementation is deeply personal and individual and I recommend that everyone meet with a doctor or functional practioner to get bloodwork and other diagnostic tests which will determine what supplements are right for you. First, supplements are almost always necessary these days because our soil is so depleted that it’s close to impossible to get all the nutrients your body needs to function optimally from food alone. That said, I never recommend supplementation as a replacement for a poor diet – supplements should enhance an already optimal diet. Among the supplements I take, these are my top 3 daily supplements which most people can benefit from. I’ve also linked the brands I like along with them.
One // Priobiotics. A good probiotic will helpbalance healthy gut bacteria, keep your immune system healthy and aid digestion. Look for probiotics with billions of CFUs.
I like: Ortho Molecular Ortho Biotic Capsules
Two // Vitamin D. An estimated 41.6% of US adults are Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes calcium absorption but it’s not commonly found naturally in most foods so supplementation is often necessary. I choose a Vitamin D3/K2 supplement – the addition of Vitamin K2 has been found to more easily bind newly absorbed calcium to bones.
I like: Thorne Research Vitamin D/K2
Three // Magnesium Glycinate. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer which helps promote a deeper, more restful sleep. There are many types of magnesium but the Magnesium Glycinate is the most easily absorbed.
I like: Metagenics Mag Glycinate
It’s rare to find the quality and types of supplements you need from one brand which is why I personally like to mix and match my daily supplement brands based on what my body most needs. Again, this is where a trained professional can be most helpful with determining what you need as an individual.
