Chances are you’ve heard of Bulletproof Coffee, black coffee that trades the traditional cream and sugar for grass-fed butter and MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil. Bulletproof Coffee was first introduced by Dave Asprey, the creator of the Bulletproof Diet, and is said to kickstart metabolism and burn fat while increasing energy and focus. But, if like me, you’re not a coffee-drinker and can’t have dairy you’re out of luck – or are you? I wanted to reap the benefits of Bulletproof Coffee without the caffeine (at least the jittery kind) or dairy so I went in search of a Bulletproof Coffee alternative.
If drinking a high-fat caffeinated drink in the morning as a healthy lifestyle practice sounds too good to be true, here’s why it works: High-fat coffee is full of easily digestible fats that the body can easily access for energy. Because it lacks carbohydrates, there is no effect on insulin levels. Instead, you get a dose of ketones – byproducts of fat – that feed the brain and bypass the liver (i.e. they’re burned as energy, not stored as fat).
While I don’t follow one specific diet or way of eating, I do love incorporating aspects of different nutrition theories into a lifestyle that works for me and this Bulletproof Coffee alternative is a perfect example of that.
This alternative version uses either Matcha or Roobois tea in place of coffee. Matcha, antioxidant-rich green tea leaves, is a fat-burner in and of itself and while it’s higher in caffeine than bagged teas, the energy it delivers is calm and focused rather than jittery as the effect of the caffeine in coffee tends to be. Rooibos is an antioxidant-rich caffeine-free alternative.
I’ve been using this in place of breakfast a two to three mornings per week (more on this coming in a separate post) and feel the difference.
