With temps soaring toward 100 degrees this weekend, David and I agreed that the only place to be was on the water or in the water, so that’s exactly what we did.
Friday night we boarded the New York Health & Racquet Club Yacht for a sunset cruise.
We’ve been meaning to do this ever since we joined the gym two years ago and finally made it happen. We gave it a 10 for the views and a 3 for the food. If you go, don’t go hungry. We promptly had dinner after we disembarked.
Saturday we drove out to Beach 95 at Rockaway Beach. A few weekends ago we took the ferry to Jacob Riis Beach which we loved, but I wanted to check out Beach 95, not reachable by ferry (Note: if you don’t have a car, you can get to Beach 95 by beach bus from the city and also the subway).
It took us a mere 45 minutes to get there by car with zero traffic. We easily found a parking spot and totally fell in love with the laid back vibe and concessions fit for any foodie.
After a day of playing in the surf, we were covered in sand and craving a margarita. We headed to Rockaway Beach Surf Club (formerly known as Tacoway Beach) for a snack and a cocktail. The bartender was so nice and welcoming and made us sugar-free margaritas while the girl taking the food order couldn’t have been less happy to be there.
After eyeing the menu in advance, we snagged a seat and I braved the line which only got longer as the evening went on. We ordered a fish taco, a tofu taco, homemade plantain chips, guac and cuke, mango and jicama spears with sriracha, salt and chili pepper – sounds weird on paper but so good. David didn’t want to leave, but we had to drive home.
On Sunday, we headed the opposite direction to another of our favorite area beaches – Long Branch, New Jersey. A quick stop at my favorite Nolita destination, Cha Cha Matcha for an iced coconut matcha latte for me and a cappuccino for David and we were on our way.
Long Branch is an hour and a half drive from NYC. This beach is also really laid back but has a family vibe and lots of shops, restaurants and beach rentals.
We opted for valet parking to make life easier and seconds later we were on the beach. We enjoyed lunch at a beach side restaurant and relaxed the afternoon away before making the drive back to the city.
My only regret is not grabbing an acai, pitaya, coconut or kale bowl at Playa Bowls for the drive back. So much yes for next time.
