Healthy Hot Spot: Kutsher’s Tribeca

03/22/12

I gave up my bagel and cream cheese habit several years ago. Thankfully, you won’t find that kind of deli fare on the menu at Kutsher’s Tribeca. Instead, you get a contemporary spin on Jewish American classics artfully served up (in ample portions) in a clean and modern bistro setting.

Eager for a light lunch, mid-week, we strolled over to Kutscher’s on a sunny Tuesday afternoon and snagged two casual seats at the bar. The spacious restaurant was just beginning to fill up with hungry, suit-clad patrons from nearby office buildings.

Owner  Zach Kutsher opened the restaurant in the spirit of the family-owned Kutsher’s Country Club, an early 1900’s resort known for its food and hospitality in the Catskill Mountains. From the looks of it, Kutsher has instilled those same values in the business at its new Tribeca digs. The staff was friendly and chatty and the food tasty.

What I Ate: Country Club Chopped Salad with Salmon

(Hint: Whenever my entree is large, I draw an invisible line down my plate. After I’ve eaten half, I check in with my stomach and see how I’m feeling. I usually box the rest to go).

What He Ate: Smoked Turkey Sandwich

When We Dined: Lunch, Tuesday

Also On the Healthier Side: Pickled Veggies, Quinoa Salad, Falafel Crusted Salmon (also available grilled), Pan Roasted Catskill Mountain Trout,(all on the lunch and dinner menus); Braised Swiss Chard, Pan Roasted Brussels Sprouts (on the dinner menu); Kutscher’s Health Salad (on the lunch and brunch menu)

Be In The Know: Join Kutsher’s for Passover on April 6 and 7. $78 per adult gets you a five-course, fixed-price traditional Seder dinner and a Seder plate, haggudahs, a box of Matzoh and sweet onion butter for the table. Reservations required. More information here.
