A hop, skip and a jump away from Lower Manhattan lies an uninhabited island that comes alive only on weekends and holidays.
On an overcast Sunday in June, David and I decided on an adventure to Governors Island. We didn’t know what to expect except that we would spend some time exploring the surroundings via bike. Once we boarded the free ferry, it was a mere five minutes from dock to dock. Once deposited on the 172 acre island, we spent some time wandering by foot and after grabbing a picnic lunch (I highly recommend packing your own), we rented bikes to continue enjoying New York’s charming, well-kept secret.
Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn. It is a world unto itself, unique and full of promise. For almost two centuries, Governors Island was a military base โ home to the US Army and later the Coast Guard, and closed to the public. In 2003 the federal government sold 150 acres of Island to the people of New York, with the Islandโs governance and funding jointly shared by the City of New York and State of New York. The remaining 22 acres of the Island was declared the Governors Island National Monument that is overseen by the National Park Service. Source: www.govisland.com
