It’s a sad and scary truth: the average American eats 62 percent of their calories from processed foods and these foods are immune system depressants. So it stands to reason that the more processed foods our society eats, the sicker it becomes.
At the IIN Fall Conference this past weekend, I had the chance to hear Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of the upcoming book SuperImmunity speak on the topic of natural immunity and what he refers to as a “nutritarian diet,” one focused on vegetables and other nutrient-dense foods.
Dr. Fuhrman said that cancer is the largest threat to a person’s lifespan and that, schockingly, childhood diets are a major cause of adult cancers. So what can we do today to prevent disease and illness from the common cold to deadly cancers?
The answer, Dr. Fuhrman says, is to eat your GOMBS!
Greens: Eat green cruciferous vegetables which lower the risk of cancer by protecting DNA from free radicals. Tip: blend vegetables while they are still raw, then add them to soup.
Onions: Garlic and onions contain a cancer-fighting sulfuric compound called alliinase.
Mushrooms: Angiogenesis inhibitors in mushrooms prevent growth of cancer cells — and fat cells. Tip: Eat a mix of mushroom types for optimal immunity
Beans and Berries: Both contain free-radical fighting anti-oxidants.
Seeds: In particular, flax seeds contain two cancer-fighting agents: lignans and omega-3 fatty acids called alphalinolenic acid (ALA)
Other cancer-fighting foods include sunshine, tomatoes (a mixture of cooked and raw) and soybeans (non-GMO)
Animal foods, milk, sugar, alcohol, stimulants and frequent small meals which increase the metabolic rate are associated with an increased risk of cancer.
How do you like to eat your GOMBS?
