Five for Friday: Soul Cycle’s Elizabeth Cutler

03/09/12

About two years ago, I trekked to the Upper West Side to take a spin class at a tiny cycling studio where it was rumored Kelly Ripa worked out. I had no idea what to expect but the moment I stepped inside I knew this wasn’t my health club’s spin class. A few months later, Soul Cycle opened in TriBeCa and now that it was outside my door, I was hooked on the high energy, inspirational and challenging workouts it delivered. Soul Cycle is the brainchild of Elizabeth Cutler and her business partner, Julie Rice, who were just a couple of busy women looking for an inspiring, full-body workout. With seven New York locations and one in LA, the indoor cycling empire the two have built appears it won’t be putting the brakes on anytime soon.

Q1. What is the #1 wellness practice you live by? That thing that you do every day without fail because it revs you up from the inside out.

A. I get my kids up and to school every day – it grounds me before my hectic work day begins.

Q2. The premise of the blog is that wherever you are in life, is exactly where you need to be. How did you get to where you are today?

A. I got where I am today by putting one foot in front of the other, keeping my karma clean, and working hard!

Q3. What was your biggest transformation along the way?

A. Along the way, my biggest transformation was discovering that passion is my driver.  I went from being in full-time mommy mode to being in executive mode, and my passion for my family and my business are what give me the strength to do both.

Q4. If you could only own five items, what would they be?

A.

  • A house that feels like a home
  • Me & Ro Earrings
  • A great set of sheets from Sferra
  • Angela Ellsworth stitch prints
  • Fresh cut flowers

Q5. What is the theme song for your life right now and why?

A. Sisters are Doin’ It for Themselves by The Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin

About Elizabeth Cutler

Elizabeth Cutler grew up in Chicago. While studying abroad from the University of Colorado she did some SOUL searching and wound up in a monastery in India, at the National Palace Museum, and in a traditional japanese house in Kyoto. Eventually she returned to Colorado where inspiring cardio was just one mountain around the corner. Hiking was a natural and breathtaking way to stay fit and happy. She sold luxury real estate and practiced Jin Shin Jyutsu (ancient practice and philosophy of healing aka grandparent of acupuncture). After meeting her husband she moved to Manhattan.

About Soul Cycle

SoulCycle’s full-body workout has revolutionized indoor cycling and taken the world of fitness by storm. Combining inspirational coaching and high-energy music, SoulCycle offers an engaging workout that benefits both the mind and the body.
