Every year, Fitness Magazine hosts a spectacular, invite-only event for local bloggers, appropriately hash tagged #FitBlogNYC.
One of the things I love and appreciate about this event is that it gets me out from behind my computer and offers the opportunity for me to meet bloggers whom I may never have otherwise met. Instead of sticking close to the bloggers I already know, I always try to branch out and sit next to people I’ve never met so I can make new connections.
This is always a challenge for me especially as a first-timer last year where the event felt slightly crowded and overwhelming to me as a newbie.
This year, it was totally more low key, the speakers were engaging, the day flew by and I had a great time meeting new bloggers and talking about our insta-crushes!
The Squeeze (love these guys for cold-pressed juice and raw/vegan food – look for the truck parked on Union Square West at 17th Street, in Brooklyn and also at the Mercedes Club) provided a light breakfast of juices, alkaline water, fruit with cacao dip and strawberry coulis and vegan muffins and scones.
After my 5- mile training run that morning, I was properly nourished for the morning sessions:
The New Formula for Fitness with Holly Rilinger
There was a lot of talk about “calories” during this session so I kind of tuned out, because as you know, I don’t count calories – how many I eat or how many I burn. Crazy-making and not worth it for long-term fitness, weight loss and a healthy relationship with food and exercise.
Holly did touch on a few points with which I 100% agree:
- If you want to be consistent with your fitness and workouts, she recommends putting. them. in. your. calendar. If you’ve ever coached with me as a client, you know I’m all about this. Yes, commit to your workouts like they’re important meetings or doctor’s appointment.
- Visualize what you want clearly. Holly does this with a dream board. So do I!
CrossFit, Mud Runs, Marathons! How to Stay Healthy in a Hard-Core World with Marci Goolsby, MD
As workouts are becoming more intense, the risk of injury is on the rise. Dr. Goolsby said it’s not that they’re dangerous workouts but rather some workouts affect people differently.
The biggest mistake most people make, she says is that they don’t ease into the workout and ramp up to quickly. That’s precisely when injuries set in.
And this. So important:
It’s a myth that bc you’re an athlete it’s normal to not have a period – Marci Goolsby @HSpecialSurgery @fitnessmagazine #FitBlogNYC

Eat Healthier, Live Happier: Game-Changing Cooking Secrets with Carla Hall
I absolutely loved this session because Carla is just so funny, authentic and engaging. She shared an inspiring story about her journey and offered some words of wisdom:
Love this from @carlahall talking about her journey: “It’s your job to be happy, not your job to be rich” @FitnessMagazine #FitBlogNYC โ Marissa Vicario (@MarissaVicario) October 16, 2014
Lunch was a healthy spread of green smoothies, salads, roasted veggies and a seasonal apple pie-inspired dessert.
The highlight of the day was definitely getting to meet and chat with Carla.
And of course, there was the swag. Lots of it, including these Hoka One One running shoes which I tried out on a short 4-mile run the next day.
It was love.
Thanks, Fitness, see ‘ya next year!
