Breakfast Ideas: Find Your Perfect Breakfast

10/06/13

Find Your Perfect Breakfast

By now you know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It supplies a third of the macro and micro-nutrients your body needs to run without a hitch. Often my clients find they’re stumped for breakfast ideas so they go without or get what’s quick.

Not any breakfast will do.

A cup of coffee gulped down on the go, a sugary cup of yogurt or even a muffin probably won’t do.

Your body deserves the right fuel for you. Everyone’s different so just because I swear by green smoothies for breakfast doesn’t mean you will too.

What Breakfast is Right for You?

One of the best ways to find out which foods are right for your body is with the Breakfast Experiment. For one week, choose from this list of breakfast ideas and eat a different breakfast each day. Record in a notebook what you ate, how you felt immediately after the meal, and how you felt again two hours later.

  • Day 1: scrambled eggs or tofu (if you’re vegan and can tolerate soy) with fresh veggies
  • Day 2: miso soup
  • Day 3: oatmeal or whole grain porridge with any toppings you like
  • Day 4: boxed breakfast cereal
  • Day 5: muffin and coffee
  • Day 6: fresh fruit
  • Day 7: fresh vegetables

You’ll notice that not all of these options are healthful choices. The idea is to compare how your body responds to a variety of foods, even the unhealthy ones.

Feel free to repeat the experiment for another seven days with different foods each morning or switch out some of the above with other breakfast ideas like:

:: A green smoothie and/or green juice

:: Whole grain or gluten-free waffle or protein pancake with nut butter and fruit

:: Leftover dinner (like fish and veggies)

:: Avocado toast (add an egg and/or smoked salmon if you like)

Which breakfasts made you feel energized? Which ones made you feel sluggish or foggy? Which left you hungry an hour later? After the experiment, try adding in more of the foods that made you feel your best.

When you eat a good breakfast, your day goes smoothly, your focus is clear, your cravings are fewer and your energy levels more consistent.

Get Even Healthier!

Happy New Year! Every year, I like to post a senti Happy New Year! Every year, I like to post a sentiment I've found that inspires me for the year ahead. This one is a little longer than usual, but worth the read. 💚💋🎊

A Willingness to Keep Showing Up

I step into this new year
gently, without resolutions,
with just a simple willingness,
to keep going,
to keep moving forward.

Not the bright, declarative kind of decision
that arrives with banners and promises,
but the quieter kind,
the one that asks for nothing grand.

No transformation.
Just an honest effort
to place one foot in front of the other,
without needing it to be a victory march.

To keep going isn’t strength.
It’s letting the days arrive as they are,
some heavy,
some hollow,
some unexpectedly kind.

It’s allowing grief, fatigue, memory, and love
to share the same room,
without insisting that any of them leave.

There is no list.
No reinvention.
No deadline for becoming someone new.
There is only the steady choice
to remain present,
to trust that willingness itself
is an act of grace.

So this year begins
not with resolve, but with intention:
the intention to stay present,
the intention to try again tomorrow,
the intention to simply keep showing up.
