Now that I’m so concerned with what I put in my body, I’ve also become pretty obsessed with what I put on it. So when I read an article today in Well + Good about Mary Louise Parker’s hair falling out from a Brazilian Blow-out, my first reaction was not one of surprise. Instead I related. Against my own better judgment, I had the popular hair-relaxing treatment done two summers ago and while the salon assured me it was safe, I felt something was amiss as I sat in the chair and was handed a face mask “in case the smell was too strong”. Just slightly. Once I felt the burning sensation on my scalp and put the mask to use to block the fumes, I knew my first time would be my last. Luckily no hair loss, but it was a god lesson in gut-checking.
Then, like a breath of fresh air, I found Sam Brocato Salon in SoHo and their formaldehyde-free Curlinterrupted Smoothing System. The treatment is safe for customers and stylists and has no fumes. Admittedly, it took slightly longer than my Brazilian Blowout and the results weren’t as convenient (read: flatiron still required), but my hair was soft, manageable and frizz-free for months after.
The perfect solution for a health-conscious, frizzy-haired New York City girl!
