In my old corporate job which was in Internet security, we used to publish our year-end security predictions. It was some of the most anticipated content of the year, so I figured why not do it for health and wellness?? Wellness trend predictions for 2016, if you will.
I spent the past few months thinking about and researching what I’ve observed and experienced in wellness, what I hope is to come and what’s inevitable in this space.
And so, I present to you …
Marissa’s Well-being and Health 2016 Wellness Forecast!
More hotels will cater to your health and wellness needs
I love to travel and hotels that offer healthy meals, holistic spa services and fitness centers and classes get bonus points in my book. While some hotel chains are already making travelers’ health and wellness needs a priority, I predict this trend becoming more mainstream in 2016 and that even more chains – not just the luxury one – will do their part to accommodate the road warrior’s desire to stay healthy away from home.
Insurance companies will recognize the work of health coaches
It’s been a long time coming and no, we’re still not there yet but I feel we’re getting closer.
Health coaches are increasingly working alongside doctors and many in the medical community are recognizing the important role certified health coaches can play in changing the health of the nation. As of 2015, there is now a National Health Coach Week, recognized by US Representative, Tim Ryan. and the Health Coach Resolution has been submitted to Congress which would further recognize the vital role Health Coaches play as wellness providers.
New superfoods will step on the scene
I remember when kale and quinoa was relegated to health food stores and those in-the-know. Now, it’s as ubiquitous as broccoli and rice. Each year makes way for the new superfood kids on the block and this year you can expect to see banana flour, a highly absorbent gluten-free flour similar coconut flour, birch and cactus waters will be the new coconut water and camel milk (!), touted as one of the most nutritious animal milks, are all among the superfoods to watch in 2016.
Sugar will become less prevalent
With new evidence that high fructose diets can trigger heart disease, more food establishment will limit sugary offerings, including soda, and start using low-fructose sweeteners.
Plant-based diets will experience a comeback
After peaking in popularity around 2011, plant-based diets like vegan and vegetarian, fell out of favor with the rise of the Paleo diet. Now, following the announcement from the World Health Organization that processed meat causes cancer and red meat is a probably carcinogen, plant-based diets will experience a re-birth.
What are your thoughts? Share any trends you see coming down the pipeline or which of the one I’ve shares here that you’re hopeful about.
