4 Ways to Take a Digital Detox

02/05/17

digital detox - Where I Need to Be

I don’t know about you, but it seems that every time I browse the Internet or peek at social media, I’m inundated by noise – bad news, negativity a barrage of opinions and more. As if the state of the world isn’t bad enough, all of the clutter on the internet is like pouring salt in a wound. Sometimes I just need to find a few ways to take a digital detox, if just for an hour or two a day.

I’ve been very clear that I don’t discuss politics here on this blog or on social media. Not because I think the issues in this country should be ignored or because I don’t have an opinion, but that I stand for love and that’s exactly what I choose to reflect in both my online and real lives.

If, like me, you’re feeling highly sensitive about the state of affairs online and in real life, I encourage you to take care of yourself with a digital detox.

Here are 4 ways to take a digital detox and give your brain a break courtesy of the PopSugar January Must-Have Box:

One // Roll out your mat: Nothing feels better than disconnecting from the world for an hour or more in a yoga class. Yoga makes me feel strong, uplifted and grounded. Yoga activated the parasympathetic nervous system – the part of your brain that relaxes your muscles and encourages you to slow down – which explains why it makes you feel so good. Get off your phone and onto your mat as often as possible. Cover your mat with Manduka’s eQua Mat Towel. It’s absorbent, quick-drying and slip-resistant so you stay grounded to your mat.

Two // Get your skin zen: It’s my Sunday night ritual to give my skin some extra TLC by applying a favorite face mask. It’s like a little re-set for my skin making it look and feel fresh and ultra-clean. Just the little boost it needs for Monday. Right now, I’m loving the Goldfaden MD Fresh A Peel Multi-Acid Resurfacing Peel. It removes dead skin cells and I’ve found my skin has become softer and brighter with continued use. Of course, the purpose of the skin zen is to zone out of technology while you’re at it. That’s the rule.

Three // Create a tech-free zone: Designate a room in your home where technology isn’t allowed. You can also designate tech-free times when you vow to stay off your devices. This could be a times-span every evening or a specific period of time on the weekend. Honor that time or space by lighting a candle and doing something calming like meditation, reading a book, coloring or some other project that doesn’t involve TV or the internet. Try out the new Glade No 3 Free Scented Candles. They’re soy free and Coconut and Beach Woods scent makes me feel like I’m on a tropical island without being nauseatingly strong.

Four // Make time for tea: There’s nothing more soothing than tea. My husband and I enjoy a cup almost every night and I love Dean & Deluca’s Peppermint Loose Leaf Tea for its digestive benefits and calming properties. Unplug and spend some time journaling with a cup of tea to unwind and disconnect.

What are your favorite ways to take a digital detox and disconnect?
