Rock the Boat

10/05/09

Feeling Summer draw to a close and the onset of Fall, I spent the weekend before last on my friends’ boats. They only have a few weeks left before they retire the boats for the Winter and with a sunny forecast, we wanted to take advantage of the weather and their last days on the water.

On Friday evening, we boarded the boats in fleece and bare feet and headed up to Northport, Long Island. We arrived at the small quaint town and anchored the boats. We would spend the night on the water but not without first heading to shore for happy hour and dinner. We entered Skipper’s Pub and were welcomed by the toasty air inside, much needed after a wet and frigid ride to reach our destination. We then proceeded next door for our dinner reservation at Maroni. Right away we were greeted by the welcoming staff and escorted to our cozy table where we learned that we would be eating a 28-course meal! Immediately, the wine began flowing and the food just kept coming. We ate and laughed for three hours until we retired to the boats for a champagne nightcap, music and more laughs.

We slept in late Saturday morning and awoke to bright sunshine and a cool, crisp breeze. After a bit of breakfast, we lounged the day away on board and went back to shore for a late pub lunch. After a nap, we headed to dinner and on our way caught the end of a Beatles cover band. Late that evening, the rain set in so we spent Sunday morning under cover. The ride back to the boat slip was peaceful and quick. And although it was nice to get back to the city and be on dry land once again, I was sad that the weekend was coming to an end.

The time I spent on the boats was one of the most fun and relaxing weekends I have experienced in quite some time. We overindulged in food and wine, we were lazy and loud. We were good friends, loving life and making fond memories. At IIN we speak about primary food and secondary food. Primary food is your life — career, relationships, spirituality and exercise — all the things that make you happy and balanced. Secondary food is the food that you eat. When the primary food is in check, the secondary food is too. Last weekend I took a break from secondary food. I forgot the rules about eating vegetables and drinking hot water and alcohol in moderation. Instead, I filled up on primary food. In return, love and happiness consumed me and followed me back to the city.

As a full-time working mom with no nanny or family As a full-time working mom with no nanny or family nearby, my mom crew saved me this week.

It was the first week of Summer break, our usual sitter is away all Summer and most camps haven't started yet. I needed childcare while I worked.

My mom friends came through. They hosted playdates, shared their nannies and sent me information about classes their kids were doing so I could piece together an active and engaging week for Valentina before her camp starts next week.

Next year I will hopefully plan better but this week reminded me of how grateful I am to have these friends. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’‹๐Ÿ’•
