A few weeks ago I read about a company called Randwich that is delivering random sandwiches for $7 each. Naturally, I was intrigued so I followed the link to their web site, specified a preference for a vegan sandwich and signed up for a delivery date a couple of weeks out – a practice in patience for someone who likes instant gratification.
I had all but forgotten about Randwich until early this week when I received a reminder about my order and was instructed to go online and pre-pay. On the day of delivery, I received a confirmation and voila, my randwich was delivered. Due to limited delivery times on the site, I specified an 11 a.m. delivery. The randwich arrived almost an hour late but that was fine because I never eat lunch before Noon anyway.
The delivery girl had a bright, sunny disposition and and as I took the brown bag from her hand, I couldn’t wait to tear in to see the prize inside.
I guess I had expected something of a phenomenal sandwich like this veggie club I ordered at Kitchenette recently.
Instead I was greeted by something much skinnier.
My Randwich included:
- Cinnamon black beans: tasty but could have been nicer as a spread
- Cilantro salsa: I love cilantro so no complaint there
- Mixed greens: I’m all about the greens but they were scant on this sandwich
- Pickled carrots: A delicious touch
- Radishes: Love radishes and these were nice and very thinly sliced but again there were only a few
- All of this sandwiched inside of a whole wheat kaiser bun which seemed a day old and a bit heavy for the light and zesty ingredients. A wrap of some sort (sprouted grain?) may have worked better.
Overall, the sandwich had excellent flavor but lacked substance. I would have liked to see some avocado on it too.
I applaud the folks at Randwich for their concept, a fun and whimsical sandwich delivery service that only accepts Tweets and social media shares as tips. I also appreciate the extra challenge involved that comes with creating a random vegan sandwich.
I would definitely give this another try. If you’re looking for something fun and different to do with a group of co-workers, order a sack of Randwiches. They deliver anywhere the subway goes and you can order up to eight sandwiches. Just make sure you plan ahead.
Have you tried Randwich yet or do you have your own favorite sandwich recipe?
