High Tea, proper Fish & Chips (with mushy peas) and a British gentleman are a few of my favorite things, so when our weekend plans included a birthday brunch for a friend at the British-inspired West Village cafe, Whitehall NYC Kitchen + Bar, I was happy to oblige.
The menu blends classic and modern British fare from fry ups to salads with an emphasis on simple, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients; and the inviting digs match the fresh eats. Damp, dark British pub Whitehall is not, but rather open, airy industrial dinette that sports exposed beams and original brick with a sunny staff to match the space.
Our group of 10, including three British Expats, felt right at home and left nary a morsel of food on our plates.
What I Ate: Avocado, Olive Oil, Baby Rocket, Chili Flakes and Two Poached Eggs on Multi-grain Toast and a fresh-baked mini loaf of Banana Bread to share. (Tip: Even when dining out, I always ensure my meal includes greens)
What They Ate: Old English Fry ups and the Whitehall Burger were the most popular picks around the table.
When We Dined: Brunch, Sunday
Also On the Healthier Side: Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Toasted Almonds , Feta Cheese and Watercress (on the brunch and dinner menus), Oysters, Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, Crispy Brussels Sprouts,Root Vegetable and Curried Lentil Stew with Minted Yoghurt, Grilled Mackerel, On the Bone Sea Bream with Lemon and Herb Oil (all on the dinner menu)
Be In the Know: Dinner is served beginning at 5:30 p.m. daily with a small menu available from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Brunch is served only on weekends. If you like Whitehall, visit its sister restaurant Highlands NYC, a contemporary Scottish Gastropub.

The rocket is great in London but I always have to indulge in proper fish and chips when I’m there. When in Rome!

I think all I eat in London is “rocket” but this place does look inviting.
