Having been a vegetarian for almost 20 years, I’ve had my share of veggie burgers. I used to rely religiously on the soy-based Morning Star Farms or Boca Burgers, especially for quick brown bag lunches that I bring to work. That was then.
The basis of any diet, especially a special diet, should be whole foods. Too often, vegetarians and vegans make the mistake of replacing the animal products they have taken out of their diet with the processed, imitation version. This virtually replaces one toxin with many others.
While, yes, those frozen veggie patties are oh-so-convenient, they are loaded with preservatives, chemicals and processed soy proteins (for more on the controversy surrounding the health benefits and dangers of soy, read my Examiner article here).
Lucky for all you veggie burger lovers, I’ve found the perfect alternative – a frozen veggie patty made with five ingredients or less like seeds, whole grains and vegetables — Organic Sunshine Burgers. They are ideal as a convenient lunch – just reheat on the stovetop (recommended) or microwave if you don’t have access to a stove. They taste divine and come in a variety of flavors like garden herb, barbeque and southwest. Ole! (Also gluten free!)
Today, I heated mine in a small pan with a touch of olive oil and also sauteed some brussel sprouts in olive oil with sea salt, pepper, rosemary and thyme as a side. It made a quick and tasty lunch. With the cooler Fall weather here, I like to nurture myself with cooked foods and root vegetables. Read my Examiner article on Seasonal Eating here for more on this topic.
Find Sunshine Burgers in the frozen food section, right next to your old flame, the veggie burger, at your favorite health food store.
